Summary
The Internship programme exists to train individuals spiritually and practically, to expose them to Christian leadership, training and ministry and to give them a well-balanced view of church ministry and church administration.
For 2009/10 Family Church aims to take on up to three individuals who will voluntarily commit one or two years for this Internship programme.
Family Church will also consider Interns from 2008/09 for a second year.
Goals / Outcomes
We commit to provide the Intern, wherever possible, with:
- Faith Works Bible College Certification (subject to grades achieved)
- Internship Certificate (presented on completion)
- Training in a specific area of ministry
- Old Testament in-depth knowledge (1st year)
- New Testament in-depth knowledge (2nd year)
- References for employment
- Discipleship; to become grounded, exceptional disciples
- Relational Contacts and Networks for future development
Schedule
The Internship will run from 1st September 2009 to 30th July 2010 during which time the Interns will commit to give Family Church (minimum):
1st Year Interns
- Sunday all day (Portsmouth Congregation) and evening
- 3 days per week, 9am – 5pm (to include Tuesday)
- Monday evenings (Bible College)
- 2 additional evenings per week, one for chosen Stream* and one for ‘exposure’ ministry** / life group
- 2nd Friday evening of every month
2nd Year Interns
- Sunday all day and evening
- 1 day per week, 9am – 5pm (preferably Tues, Thurs & Fri)
- Monday evenings (Bible College)
- 1 additional evening per week for chosen Stream*
- 2nd Friday evening of every month
On occasion, with advance notice, Interns may be called upon to work Saturdays.
Reporting To
The Interns will come under the oversight of Mark and Sarah Carter. They will also receive pastoral care from Senior Pastor Andy Elmes and other Family Church Pastors as appropriate. They will be accountable to the leader of their chosen Stream*.
It is recommended that each Intern spends their Internship attending a life-group whenever their ‘exposure’ ministry does not require any evening commitment.
Pastoral Care
Pastoral oversight will include a scheduled fortnightly meeting between Interns and Senior Pastor, and a scheduled fortnightly meeting with Stream Leaders. Once a month Interns will also meet with Mark or Sarah Carter, during office time.
These meetings will cover:
- Mentoring – feedback from Intern on growth in Stream
- Coaching in goals
- Accountability
- Relationships – family, friends, ministry, other…
- Temperature check – feedback from Intern on Internship programme
Discipleship
The Intern will attend Faith Works Bible College for the duration of the Internship.
Other teaching programmes will be provided throughout the year, during office hours.
Each Intern will undertake open learning study; Old Testament Survey (1st year) and New Testament Survey (2nd year).
*Streams
Each Intern will choose one Stream to serve for one year in our Portsmouth congregation. They will be accountable to the leader of this ministry for their growth within this Stream, and will be expected to meet with them fortnightly.
The Streams currently available are:
- Worship
- Children’s Church (all*stars)
- Momentum Youth
- Events
**Exposure
1st year Interns will spend a period of time serving the following ministries with a view to being exposed to all areas of church life:
- Momentum Youth
- Homeless Outreach
- Kids Church
- Events Team
- New Believers
- Media
- Missions (considered independently)
- Visits to other churches and conferences (as applicable)
- Empower Conference (one weekend a year)
This list may change according to Family Church’s schedule and ministries.
Church Life
Every Intern is expected to get involved in as many areas of Family Church as possible, including serving at most events. Interns are required to help practically to release Pastors to do ministry (i.e. errands and baby-sitting).
Schools Work
Interns are expected to get involved with Schools Work during their office hours as part of their development. This includes teaching at lunch clubs and in classrooms.
Office Duties
1st Year Interns will serve in Family Church’s Central Office in Portsmouth throughout the week. Office Duties will include:
- Counting and banking offerings
- Audio production & copying
- Cleaning
- Preparing Conference Rooms
- Printing/Photocopying
- Mailings
- Reception duties
- Serving lunch/refreshments as required
- General administration duties as required
Training will be given as needed and Interns will be encouraged to seek improvements to office tools and processes.
Personal Development
Family Church will aim to develop each Intern in the following areas (list not exhaustive):
- Time keeping
- Goal setting
- Commitment & integrity
- Life-skills (including personal health)
1st year Interns will be issued with 10 books throughout the year, 2nd year Interns with 3 books. Topics will include:
- Spiritual Development
- Leadership
- Life-skills
- Relationships
All 1st year Interns will be expected to produce a book report for each and maintain a journal throughout their Internship.
Spiritual Development
Each Intern will work with pastoral oversight to develop (list not exhaustive):
- Prayer life
- Worship
- Spiritual Gifts
- Fruit of the Spirit
Characteristics of a Potential Intern
Family Church are looking to recruit Interns who:
- Are born-again Christians
- Have approval of parents/family
- Are self-sufficient (and tithing)
- Have studied to GCSE standard
- Have no other study commitments for duration of Internship
- Are PC literate
- Are single, and committed to stay that way until the end of the Internship, or married and partner is in full agreement of the Internship
Applicants are selected through a recruitment process that involves a written Application Form and Interview. Family Church are looking for candidates who can show that they are:

- Teachable
Financial Details
The Interns will not be charged for the Internship, nor will they receive financial support from Family Church. Interns are expected to be responsible for their own income from other sources and be financially self-sufficient.
Interns will be encouraged to raise £1,000 towards a missions trip on the conclusion of the academic year.
